Phenomena One™
Birth of a Genius and a Madman
P# 1
During the Cold War, there were orphanages and other refuges throughout Russia to help those affected by the war. There were also secret groups of highly intelligent men and women who weren’t willing to use their knowledge and special abilities for the advancement of ideals based on human misery; instead, they were trying to find ways to help innocent casualties who were victims of the war.
Most of these humanitarians lived in underground places and mazelike complexes, which they created to protect themselves from the military, KGB agents and other spies trying to find those who might pose a threat to their ideals.
A leader of one group of engineers and scientists had been building an underground facility to use as a center of operation for recruiting and teach young minds the true value of knowledge. Coincidentally, this secret underground facility was near an orphanage, and many of their promising young engineers had come from this orphanage.
The lead engineer always stressed the importance of nonviolent methods of solving problems. For the most part, most of the recruits followed this code, especially the older ones. Unfortunately, some of the younger ones had different principles deep down in their hearts: violence against violence. After all, they had been born in a different environment.
As engineers, they had the advantage of knowledge and insight of the environment around them. The military and spies had the knowledge of combat and espionage, but they knew quite little about their surrounding environment. Many military personel as well as KGB intruders became lab rats for these young engineers.

One of them, who had lived through the Cold War and had seen its effect on innocent bystanders, including some of his family and friends that fell victim to the KGB and military personnel, held a grudge against them. His name was Cladziribijz.
The lead engineer spent a great deal of time helping Cladziribijz overcome those thoughts and feelings, but in the end, there was little he could do. Clad had already chosen his own path, and no one could steer him away from it; since he had become an expert in the field of psychology, no one could get into his mind. Eventually, Clad left the group, along with others sharing the same ideals.
Many of the older members feared that Clad might reveal their location to the KGB or military personnel, but the lead scientist assured them that it would never happen. He knew that even within Clad’s distorted way of reasoning, he was far too grateful to them for what they had done for him. The lead scientist was right; Clad would never turn on them.
However, Clad was diving far too deep into the dark domain of the human mind, and he went mad. It did not show on the exterior, as he portrayed an amazing level of sanity on the surface, but in solitude or among the few people whom he really trusted, he would show just how distorted his mind had become. For example, he would use airborne chemicals to force any invading individuals towards traps he had designed for his experiments.
He still had great respect for the lead scientist who took him in, and would feel ashamed if he found out about his experiments, so he went through a great deal of trouble to keep the experiments from him. But eventually, the lead scientist found out. He confronted Clad, and of course, Clad was ashamed. He apologized to him but did not agree to stop the experiments, arguing that they were justified.
The lead scientist was disappointed and worried. He knew he couldn’t stop Clad and decided to train someone who could. However, the task was going to be harder than he expected. He went through a large number of promising young boys that he thought might have the capacity for such a challenging assignment, but they all failed. The lead scientist found himself in a desperate situation, as Clad’s state was deteriorating. He was becoming more horrendous in his actions.

Then the lead scientist thought: why not a girl? Perhaps a girl might have the abilities that his previous recruits lacked. He remembered a young girl who lived in the orphanage not far from the underground complex. She was often allowed inside, and he remembered her as being quite discreet and never bothersome. She was eager to learn and be helpful. He sent for her. When they brought her to him, he remembered that they had named her Luftganstein, which some considered an odd name, but the lead scientist thought of it as fittingly unique.
He showed her around, and she was happy, since every time she had visited the complex in the past, she’d wished she could’ve stayed. Her wish had finally come true. The lead scientist ran some psychological test on her to check the development of her mind. She passed all the tests, even some tests that his previous recruits hadn’t passed. Appreciating how exceptional she was, he initially focused on training her so that she could go after Clad and stop him, but his main focus for her eventually changed.
As the training brought him closer to her, he started developing a strong affection for Luft, and began seen her as a daughter rather than as a tool to stop a madman. He started building a father-daughter relationship with her to the point that he almost forgot about Clad. And in fact, he had already made up his mind not to send Luft after him. Instead, he wanted her to grow up cared for, so that she could live a normal life.
Unfortunately, fate already had a life reserved for Luft... one, that was anything but normal.
